WATCH: Hjorth Road Elementary gets a new playground

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Hundreds of volunteers are breaking a sweat in North Surrey today. The crew is building a brand new playground for Hjorth Road Elementary, an inner-city school.

“It’s a level one inner-city school. These kids are excited to be here. It’s their safe place. When we told them that they were getting a playground, I’ve never kids so excited in my life,” principal Nancy Brennan told Global News.

The school was told their 30 year-old playground was unsafe and needed to come down. But the three-person Parents’ Advisory Council didn’t know where they’d find the funds to replace it. Thanks to grant money and physical labour, the students will have a new place to play by the end of the day.
